Labor Leader Bryan Green said today the Liberals non-decision over the future of woodchip exports from southern forests proves the Government is in a shambles.
“The Government’s deceit and incompetence is now on show for all Tasmanians to see,” Mr Green said.
“It is clear there are deep divisions within the Liberal Party with a deliberate decision by Cabinet to roll Paul Harriss and Guy Barnett over the future of woodchip exports from Triabunna.
“Will Hodgman needs to come clean over when the decision to rule out compulsory acquisition of Triabunna was actually made – did it pre-date the release of the Community Development Committee’s interim report?
“If so, the Government is guilty of inappropriately interfering in the deliberations of a parliamentary committee.”
Mr Green said more detail was needed on the proposal to export woodchips from Hobart’s Macquarie Point.
“It took the Government six months to identify an option that was already thoroughly explored by the previous government.
“While Labor supports the need for an export facility in the south of Tasmania, the Liberals need to explain how they intend to overcome the significant challenges associated with this site, including upgrade costs and logistics.
“The Liberals led people to believe they had all the answers to the challenges facing Tasmania’s forest industry when in fact they have absolutely no idea what they are doing.”
