Alderman Jeff Briscoe said following the historic win last night at the Hobart City Council meeting in approving the Battery Point Walkway Stage 1, it was time to make peace with the foreshore residents.
“The energy, resources and time that this project has required would have taken a toll on the foreshore residents themselves as well as on proponents and supporters.
“So I call upon them to now work with the officers of the Hobart Council to finalise the final details – which will include detailed design, colors and other finishes, the landscaping at the beginning of the walkway; regulations for its use and signage.
“I don’t think legal appeals and other challenges are productive – it just consumes ratepayer monies, delays and continues the situation that there must be winners and losers.
“There was the time to have the battle for the public’s right to access the waterfront but now it is time to make the peace and start healing the divisions in Hobart’s community – rich or poor – for the benefit of all”
• Suzy Cooper: I’ve attended two candidates’ forums over this past week and, considering that I had two minutes to speak in the first one and ten in the second, I decided to speak on the same topic at each: ‘People say that the under 35s don’t vote because they don’t care. I think they care passionately about their world, but they don’t know what they can do.’
