The Premier has been damned by his own words on forced redundancies.

During Budget Estimates today the Premier, Will Hodgman, tried to argue that using Section 47 of the State Service Act to sack public servants did not amount to a broken promise on forced redundancies.

But he has been damned by his own words:

“If a position is deemed unnecessary by the Premier’s razor gang, and then placed on the redeployment list then the employee is effectively sacked. They are given a token six months to redeploy,” Will Hodgman, June 22, 2011.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said while Labor did not use the provisions allowed for under Section 47, the Liberals had refused to rule out forced sackings.

“Will Hodgman has already broken his promise to reduce the size of the public service by 500 workers and now he has broken his pledge not to invoke forced redundancies.

“This Government has no shame. The Premier is claiming that Section 47 does not amount to forced redundancies when just three years ago he was arguing the exact opposite.

“The Premier lied to public servants to get elected. Plain and simple.”
