Shadow Minister for Police David Llewellyn today accused the Government of going cold over its election promise to establish a special unit to investigate unsolved murders and other crimes.

“The Liberals gave a guarantee they would set up a Cold Case Unit but are now backing away from the commitment,” Mr Llewellyn said.

“In parliament today, Rene Hidding could not say when the unit will be established.

“The families of victims of unsolved crimes have been badly misled by the Liberals.

“These people were given false hope because the establishment of a Cold Case Unit appears years away.

“The Liberals’ promise could not have been clearer and now they are in government, they are responsible for honouring this commitment.

“There are also very real concerns in the community over the impact this week’s budget will have on front line services and that police will not be immune to cuts.”
