AMA Family Doctor Week 21-26 July 2014

AMA Tasmania will TODAY launch AMA Family Doctor Week 2014, which aims to celebrate
the 30,681 GPs across Australia who help patients identify and treat health problems early,
better manage existing conditions, minimise their risks of disease, and to live healthier lives.

AMA Tasmania President Dr Tim Greenaway said there were 500 GPs operating across
Tasmania who played a vital role in the lives of Tasmanian families.

“Almost 90 per cent of Australians have a regular GP and enjoy better health because of this
ongoing and trusted relationship,” Dr Greenaway said.

“Vital for Tasmania’s stretched public hospital system, the preventative and tailored care
provided by GPs keeps people out of hospitals and associated health costs down.

“Family doctors are the key to sustainability in the health care system because of the role
they play in preventative health care, early diagnosis and treatment, coordinated care and
chronic disease management.

“They are highly skilled and trained to provide excellent health care to people through all
stages of life.”

Dr Greenaway said Family Doctor Week was an opportunity to highlight how fundamental
family doctors were to the state’s health care system and quality patient health care, as well
as to acknowledge them for their expertise and commitment to patient care.
