The Liberal Government welcomes today’s opening of the Light Weight Coated Conversion Project at Norske Skog’s Boyer Mill.

The mill is a significant contributor to Tasmania’s economy and it is pleasing to see this upgrade completed, ensuring job numbers at the mill are retained.

The State Government provided a $13 million loan to help this project while the Federal Government contributed $28 million.

At the peak of construction there were more than 250 people working directly on this project.

The Liberal Government is committed to backing business to help grow our economy and create jobs.

We are assisting business through policies such as our permanent headworks holiday, our Buy Local policy, mandatory disaggregation of large or statewide contracts and local benefits test. As well our Tasmanian Energy Strategy will provide choice in the market and deliver lower energy prices for all Tasmanians, making it a more attractive environment to do business.

The Liberal Government will continue to support iconic businesses such as Norske Skog which has been operating in Tasmania for over 73 years.

The completion of this latest upgrade will see one of the mill’s paper machines go from manufacturing newsprint to LWC-grade paper which is used for catalogues.

This project will see 140,000 tonnes of LWC paper produced every year and sold into the Australian Catalogue market, contributing not only to Tasmania’s economy but the Australian economy as well.

The $85 million investment that Norske Skog has undertaken will help secure its operations into the future.
