Premier Will Hodgman and Treasurer Peter Gutwein have failed to rule out using forced redundancies to slash public sector spending.

Labor Leader Bryan said the Liberal Government had spent the week preparing Tasmanians for a horror budget.

It comes as backbencher Adam Brooks admitted today that “we can’t fund everything”.

“Before the election, Will Hodgman ruled out using forced redundancies – arguing that 500 public sector positions could be cut through natural attrition alone,” Mr Green said.

“Now faced with $2.1 billion worth of cuts courtesy of Tony Abbott, the comforting rhetoric has dried up.

“Will Hodgman and Peter Gutwein were given multiple opportunities to rule out forced redundancies and refused to do so.

“It has finally dawned on the Liberals that they promised too much and Tasmanians who will feel the pain as a result.”

The Liberals have also clearly shifted language when it comes to front line services.

“What once was a promise to ‘rebuild’ front line services has since changed to talk of ‘reform’,” Mr Green said.

“The Liberals need to come clean on what this means in practical terms.

“In light of the refusal to rule out forced redundancies, can their promises when it comes to teachers, nurses and police still be trusted?”
