Announcing The Minister for the Arts, The Hon. Vanessa Goodwin, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Festival of Voices’ Entrepreneurial Leadership in Practice Program, June 14/15, open to keen participants from all over Australia and it’s FREE.
Why would a singing festival run an entrepreneurship course you may ask?
The Festival of Voices (www.festivalofvoices.com) has developed a partnership with UTAS to find emerging artists and entrepreneurs wishing to develop their arts related business and keen to use the festival (its audiences, infrastructure, networks) to do so. After the two day course, the Festival will mentor up to 20 selected candidates on their businesses in order to develop new ideas and joint ventures for mutual benefit.
The program is supported by UTAS, Start Up Tasmania and The Tasmanian Innovation Exchange and includes an outstanding line up of the best of the best: Jac Bowie from Sydney, Burlesque performer turned global entrepreneur in less than 12 months, Damon Wise, General Manager of Southern Cross, Diane Tompson, Telstra Business Woman of the Year in 2005, Lara Giddings Shadow Minister for the Arts, and of course the Minister for the Arts, Vanessa Goodwin.
Dr Vanessa Goodwin MLC was elected as the Liberal Member for Pembroke in August 2009. She was appointed as the Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Minister for Corrections, Minister for the Arts and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, following the State Election in March 2014.
Vanessa has a PhD in Law from the University of Tasmania, a Master of Philosophy (Criminology) from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Tasmania.
Prior to her election to the Legislative Council, Vanessa worked in the Department of Police and Emergency Management for over 11 years, with responsibility for conducting research, managing crime prevention projects and developing policy advice. She played a key role in the establishment of the U-Turn program, a diversionary program for young people at risk of, or involved in, motor vehicle theft. In addition, Vanessa’s research interests have included burglary and repeat victimisation, and intergenerational crime.
Vanessa is a fitness enthusiast and enjoys cycling and running. She participated in the Diabetes Tasmania Cycle Sri Lanka Challenge in October 2011 and regularly participates in PolliePedal. Vanessa also enjoys bushwalking and has walked the Kokoda Track and climbed Federation Peak.
Vanessa has had a long-term interest in the Arts, particularly in theatre and music. As the new Minister, Vanessa has been actively engaging with stakeholders across the cultural and creative sector.
Vanessa is extremely pleased to be the Minister for the Arts and sees the sector as one of Tasmania’s competitive strengths with plenty of opportunity to create jobs and build further on what is a dynamic and exciting part our state.
