TASMANIA’S Lyons electorate will benefit from the Federal Government’s commitment to build the infrastructure of the 21st century with more than $500 million for local projects from the 2014-15 Budget.

Lyons will also share in a $400 million upgrade of Tasmania’s Midland Highway and $119.6 million to be spent on freight rail revitalisation to be started next financial year.

The Midland Highway and the state’s main north-south rail link run mostly through the electorate of Lyons.

The funding is part of the Government’s Economic Action Strategy to invest a record $1 billion over four years in productivity-enhancing infrastructure in Tasmania which will create thousands of jobs, slash travel times and boost economic growth.

Federal Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson said that the funding would support much needed infrastructure projects in his electorate.

“It will bring job opportunities, boost our economy and make our roads safer for motorists,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.

He said that infrastructure projects in Lyons to receive funding from the Budget in the next 12 months included:
• $400,000 for the $1 million Mountford Berryfruits’ strawberry production project, at Longford; and
• $3.5 million towards the $11.5 million Huon Aquaculture value-added factory, at Paramatta Creek.

Major infrastructure projects in Lyons to receive money from the Budget over the next four years will include:
• $1 million for the upgrade of the Port Sorell Road;
• $3.2 million for land acquisition for the proposed Bridgewater Bridge development, on top of $3.2 million already provided; and
• A share of the $26.9 million ear-marked for the upgrade of the North-East Freight Roads which includes replacement of timber bridges in the Mathinna, Evercreech area.
Mr Hutchinson said that projects like these will relieve the pressure on existing infrastructure and unlock the economic capacity of Lyons, making it an even better place to live and do business.

The Federal Government’s infrastructure package will drive growth and create jobs so that we can have a stronger, more prosperous economy in Lyons.
