Labor’s opposition to our “three strikes and you’re out” policy for Housing Tasmania tenants confirms they are soft on anti-social behavior.
As I made perfectly clear in Parliament today, the Liberal Government is absolutely committed to introducing the three strikes and you’re out policy for public housing tenants.
This policy was developed at the request of Housing Tasmania tenants after their repeated pleas for action fell on the deaf ears of the Labor Government for too many years.
It is widely supported by Housing Tasmania tenants and the broader community.
Housing Tasmania will consult with the community sector and Crown Law about the new policy and changes to tenancy agreements.
While significant time and energy is invested in supporting tenants to interact positively with their neighbours, and with the community more broadly, there are times when tenant behaviour is unacceptable.
Aggression and serious anti-social behaviour, including trespass and vandalism, can be a nightmare for neighbours and can cause enormous anxiety for victims, particularly children.
The Liberal Government does not want to see tenants evicted unless absolutely necessary and without all opportunities to fix their behaviour having been attempted.
While the Liberal Government recognises there is no silver-bullet for nuisance behaviour, this policy will go a long way to address concerns expressed by tenants so that we can rebuild essential services in Tasmania and fix the mess left by Labor.
