… on marriage equzality free vote

Marriage equality advocates have called on Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to allow a free vote on marriage equality following a commitment from NSW Premier, Mike Baird, to do the same.

In the NSW Parliament this afternoon Mr Baird responded to a question on the issue from Sydney MP, Alex Greenwich, by committing to a free vote on all legislative matters pertaining to same-sex couples.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“We congratulate Mike Baird on upholding Liberal Party principles and traditions by allowing a free vote, and we urge Mr Abbott to do the same.”

“Mike Baird and Tony Abbott share similar electorates and similar values, so if Mr Baird can allow a free vote on marriage equality why not Mr Abbott as well?

Mr Baird praised former NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, for allowing a free vote on marriage equality and said his position will be “exactly the same”.

Other state Liberal leaders who allow a free vote on marriage equality include WA Premier, Colin Barnett, and Tasmanian Premier, Will Hodgman.
