The Southern Hairy nosed wombat is a much beloved wildlife icon of South Australia. As the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats numbers continue to decline, so begs the question what are we doing about ensuring survival of these cuddle bums.

The answer as a collective is ‘very little’. Appallingly, Brigitte Stevens and Clare Jans are alone at the frontline and are all that stands between the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat and extinction.

Poor land management practices continue and wombat destruction permit approvals by the Government up 509%, despite recent fires annihilating populations.

Fighting to rescue, rehabilitate and save the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat, the women receive no Government funding, and minimal donations. Running on shoestring, Brigitte has literally invested all to keep the Wombat Awareness Organisation afloat, focusing on what matters most, these mysterious and illusive marsupials

Brigitte is one of Australia’s finest animal conservationists, tutored under the guidance of the late Steve Irwin at Australia Zoo.In 2005 after finding an orphaned Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat ‘pinky’, her life turned on its axis. Within 18 months, Brigitte had packed up and moved to South Australia with her wombat ‘Barney’ tobe closer to the wild wombats, only found in SA.

She realised very quickly that the wombats were in a dire predicament. So Brigitte established the Wombat Awareness Organisation and donated her life savings to the wombats.
