With an extended Easter break upon us, thieves will be on the lookout for easy targets as many
Tasmanians head away for the holiday period.
RACT Insurance spokesperson Harvey Lennon said many families were looking forward to a visit from
the Easter Bunny and spending time together down at a shack, giving thieves an opportunity to put a
dampener on festivities.
“Given the Easter break is shortly followed by the Anzac Day long weekend this year, many people
have taken the opportunity to get away and could be leaving their homes for close to a fortnight,
tempting many thieves,” Mr Lennon said.
“There are a number of safety tips for all home owners to consider before they pack up and hit the
open road such as making your home look occupied, locking up, telling neighbours how long you’re
away for and don’t advertise the trip on social media.”
“Thieves now use social media as a prime source of information about people’s lives, so it only
stands to reason that a thief would use this medium to troll for targets.”
“Holiday periods typically see an increase in thefts and the hard and fast reality is that many renters
and home-owners don’t have insurance or up-to-date cover.”
