The admission by Liberal Leader Will Hodgman that he intends to delay his first state budget until late August increases the likelihood of deeper cuts to public services than first feared.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that it would have been a simple and swift matter to prepare a state budget based on the savings and spending that the Liberals promised during the election campaign.
“A May budget to deliver election commitments is certainly achievable,” Mr McKim said.
“The unnecessary delay raises real concerns that Mr Hodgman intends to cut public services even harder than he said he would, just as incoming Liberal governments around the country have done.”
“This begs the question, what are they not telling Tasmanians?”
“Mr Gutwein is promising a ‘real Liberal budget’, and we know that will mean attacks on public services,” Mr McKim said.
