The state’s farmers today applauded the recognition of Tasmanian Irrigation’s flagship Midlands Water Scheme in being named as a finalist in two categories at the National Infrastructure Awards, the Smart Infrastructure Project of the Year and Government Partnership Excellence award.

The $104 million scheme, which local farmers have heavily backed financially, takes water from Arthurs Lake to as far south as Jericho. When completed, it will deliver up to 38,500 ML of water a year to 55,484 ha of irrigable land.

“This is the showcase irrigation scheme that will demonstrate very visibly along the Midland Highway in the years to come just how clever our farmers are,” TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said today.

“This scheme will do for Midland farms what irrigation has done for the Coal River Valley.

“For some irrigators, it could mean diversifying into dairying, horticulture or viticulture. For others, it may not change what they produce; but it will provide them with 95 per cent surety of water. That means farmers will not need to worry about security of water for livestock and crops in dry periods.

“So, each time we drive through those great agricultural areas, we will see farms flourishing and new and exciting activities afoot – and that is good news for all Tasmanians.” Ms Davis said.
