The Tasmanian Greens today announced their Supporting our Neighbourhood Houses policy initiative.
Community Services Spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said the Greens are committed to a strong, effective Neighbourhood House network in Tasmania, announcing a total package of $2.995 million to strengthen their capacity to reach out to Tasmanians.
“Tasmania’s Neighbourhood Houses are the heart and soul of their communities,” Ms O’Connor said.
“In 30 years of operating in the state, they have welcomed newcomers, supported individuals and families in need and work to reduce social isolation within communities.”
“Under the Labor-Green Government, our outstanding network of Neighbourhood Houses received an extra $25 000 each House, recurrently and a total of $6 million in capital funding for much-needed upgrades. This was vital funding but we know as Neighbourhood Houses continue to grow, more support from government will be needed.”
“We know every dollar invested in our Neighbourhood Houses is an investment in people and increasing their community connections and capacity to explore new recreational, educational, training and employment opportunities.
“In recognition of the vital grassroots role they play, the Greens will invest in ensuring current Neighbourhood Houses are adequately resourced, and also assess other communities’ need to have a House established.”
“The Tasmanian Greens recognise the vital community development role played by Neighbourhood Houses and will continue to invest in their capacity.”
“Neighbourhood Houses are the warm and generous hearts of our communities and together form a vital and vibrant network across our state.”
• Invest $660 000 each year over the forward estimates to ensure our Neighbourhood Houses are adequately staffed and resourced, with each House receiving an extra $20, 000 per annum.
• Invest $1 million into a capital fund to assist in refurbishing the DHHS funded Neighbourhood Houses across the state
• Invest $15, 000 to conduct an analysis of communities without Neighbourhood Houses to assess need for establishment of such a facility.
