The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim MP today announced a $6 million commitment to rejuvenate the Hobart waterfront and central business district.

“Hobart is already one of the world’s most happening cities, and we would like it to become one of the world’s most people friendly,” Mr McKim said.

“Our plan will see the Hobart CBD and waterfront receive a much-needed makeover, to create more people-friendly public spaces and less traffic congestion.”

“By making the most of Hobart’s natural assets and borrowing the best ideas from cities like Copenhagen, New York and Sydney, we can continue to transform our state capital into a place unlike anywhere in the world.”

“Our plan borrows strongly from the groundbreaking Gehl report of 2010, which found that the dominance of cars in public spaces needed to be addressed to improve the city’s people-friendliness.”

“The Hobart City Council’s Inner City Action Plan has made some progress, but we believe the State Government should be playing a more active role in helping fulfil the vision of making Hobart a city with people in mind.”
