Presented by Ten Days in association with Strut & Fret
A tent of mirrors, adorned with ornate velvet, canvas and leaded glass has arisen from Hobart’s
waterfront and is set to bowl Tasmanian audiences over with 18 jam packed days filled with worldrenowned
cabaret and burlesque performances, circus acrobatics, side-splitting comedy, family fun and
the very best of Australian and international musical talent from 6-23 March.
Ten Days Executive Director and Producer Marcus Barker said the Spiegeltent experience and the wide
array of performances on offer inside the tent as well as the sumptuous Outdoor Lounge outside the
Spiegeltent, was an experience not to be missed.
“The internationally-renowned Spiegeltent, proudly brought to Tasmania by Ten Days, has been erected
on the forecourt of PW1 and will play host to 33 local, national, and international shows with over 140
artists set to grace the stage,” Mr Barker said.
“Kicking off the Spiegeltent program in style is a free community opening extravaganza on Thursday, 6
March on-site from 5pm, featuring roving entertainment from giant dinosaur puppets, illusionists and fire
breathers as well as musical entertainment and a sneak peak from headline act Cantina.
“At 8pm, guests should get their dance shoes ready for Hot Dub Time Machine’s free audio visual super
party, featuring the best songs ever from the past 60 years in the world’s first time travelling dance party.
“For those who build up an appetite after all the action, The Outdoor Lounge has everything they need,
with a pop-up restaurant by Smolt, fine Tasmanian produce from Tasman Quartermasters, Written on
Tea, Sweet Envy and Big Bessie, Greek cuisine by the Estia Festival, and a range of beverages by Jansz,
Domaine A, Clover Hill and Cascade.”
Mr Barker said once the extravagant opening night festivities were over, the Spiegeltent program would
be in full force, with the gorgeous Tasmanian singer and songwriter Lulu and the Paige Turners getting the
party started at 6.45pm on Friday, 7 March.
“We are also very excited to welcome to Tasmania our two very different internationally acclaimed
headline acts, La Soirée and Cantina, which we know will leave audiences screaming for more,” he said.
“Currently playing on Broadway in New York City and with a second show wowing audiences at the
Sydney Opera House, La Soirée comes to Hobart with an intoxicating cocktail of cabaret, burlesque, circus
side show and contemporary variety shows, while for those a little more courageous, Cantina offers a
daring and extraordinary display of acrobatics, contortion and aeralism.”
Mr Barker said joining these headline acts inside the Spiegeltent were two of Australia’s favourite standup
comedians, Frank Woodley and Tom Gleeson, alongside suitably eccentric British cult musical group
The Tiger Lillies as well as contemporary Scottish folk band Breabach and the most loved children’s
songwriter in Australian history, Peter Combe.
“Joining these acts will be musical performances from the ARIA award winning The Audreys, Hot Dub
Time Machine, Mojo Juju, The Gypsy Four, Maria Lurighi and Andrew Legg, Paul Capsis, as well as
Offspring heartthrob, Eddie Perfect and the Renovators.
“For children and the young at heart, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, the hilarious comedy duo The Listies, Monski
Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall and Peter Combe, are all sure to entertain and delight.
“There is literally something in the program for everyone – eat drink and be merry at the free Outdoor
Lounge, or step inside the Spiegeltent if you dare to experience one of the many shows on offer.”
The March 2014 Spiegeltent extravaganza is one of the first steps in an exciting new strategic direction for
Ten Days, evolving from a biennial festival to offering audiences across the State access and enjoyment to
a range of multifaceted cultural experiences all year round.
