“I congratulate Tony Abbott for making overseas adoptions easier,” FamilyVoice national research officer Ros Phillips said today.

“There is significant evidence that vulnerable children do better when raised in a permanent loving home rather than an orphanage, even if the adoptive parents belong to a different race and culture.

“Children need security and individual love, well beyond the age of 18 when orphanages cease their care. Likewise, Australian children whose natural parents are unable to care for them deserve the security of properly screened adoptive parents, not the insecurity of a succession of foster homes.

“I urge state governments to follow Tony Abbott’s example and change their laws to make adoption processes simpler and more accessible,” Ros Phillips said.
