Debra Thurley State Candidate for Franklin says she wants the State’s college system left alone and would oppose the Liberals policy to expand all schools in Tasmania to Year 11 & 12 as not feasible and certainly not a sensible use of finite resources.
Ms Thurley is particularly perturbed at any moves to undermine the excellent work undertaken and the significance of Rosny College within her electorate of Franklin.
If elected I would fight for the people of Franklin to retain the status and student numbers to Rosny College. Imagine if Clarence or Rose Bay High School offered classes to Years 11 & 12 what that would do to the intake at Rosny College.
It is conceded that some regional areas of Tasmania need access to Year 11 & 12 similar to what has been achieved at St Helens on the East Coast but generally subjects on offer and teacher quality could be compromised as a result of the Liberal Policy.
Instead the Palmer United Party would fight for a focus on early childhood learning in a concerted attempt to improve the numeracy and literacy levels of all students within the primary years at Tasmanian schools. This is the time when gaining these skills sets the foundation for all future learning and aiming for all students by Grade 2 to have adequate numeracy and literacy skills should greatly improve future education opportunities.
