Parliament House Lawns, 11am, Saturday, January 25, 2014
Independent Federal MP Andrew Wilkie will be one of the speakers at a protest gathering on the lawns of Parliament House in Hobart, calling for a Commission of Inquiry into the murder conviction of Sue Neill-Fraser, currently serving a 23 year sentence at Risdon jail.
The rally, organised by a group of concerned citizens, marks the 5th anniversary of the disappearance of Neill-Fraser’s partner of 18 years, Bob Chappell, whose body has never been found.
Based solely on circumstantial evidence – without a murder weapon produced in evidence and without any witnesses – Neill-Fraser’s trial is regarded by legal experts and many members of the public as a gross miscarriage of justice as serious as the historic Lindy Chamberlain case 30 years ago.
Other speakers at the rally will be barrister Greg Barns, Neill-Fraser’s lawyer of the past 18 months, Barbara Etter APM and filmmaker Eve Ash, whose documentary of the case, Shadow of Doubt, galvanised outrage by revealing many flaws in the investigation as well as the trial.
Following the rally, Shadow of Doubt will be screened at Hobart State Cinema at 1pm (it will also be screened on Wednesday, January 29 at 6.15pm)
