Creating an innovative, competitive, profitable and sustainable agriculture industry is the key goal of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) going into the March 15 election.
“We look forward to engaging with an incoming state government to achieve that goal,” TFGA president Wayne Johnston and chief executive Jan Davis said today.
“The prime goal has to be an economic environment that allows the agriculture sector to get on with the job of growing food and fibre,” they said.
“The community has an expectation that it can be fed and clothed – and these fundamentals are the basis of a stable modern day society.
“Food and fibre will become the currency of tomorrow. In 30 years time, the community will be more concerned about food security than the material concerns of the contemporary world of today.
“We produce some of the best food and fibre in the world. It is imperative that we maximise our competitive advantages.
“With the irrigation infrastructure that is currently being constructed, we are on the cusp of an agricultural revolution that will see the agriculture sector become the pre-eminent wealth creator for the state.
“We expect the incoming government to deliver programs and regulatory regimes that have the best outcomes for agriculture, the mainstay of the Tasmanian economy.
“And we want Big Brother off our backs,” Mr Johnston and Ms Davis said.
