The Tasmanian Greens today exposed the fundamental failure of the Labor and Liberal parties’ energy policies, which had failed to deliver the lowest possible electricity prices to Tasmanian households.
During GBE scrutiny hearings today, Greens Energy spokesperson Kim Booth MP pointed to the Liberal and Labor parties’ refusal to follow the Electricity Expert Panel’s advice that Aurora Energy’s value would be harmed without wholesale energy market competition.
“The Aurora Energy hearing has once again highlighted the Liberal and Labor parties’ failure to understand the need for wholesale competition in order to lower power prices,” Mr Booth said.
“Liberal and Labor’s refusal to listen to the Electricity Expert Panel’s advice regarding wholesale competition has resulted, as predicted, in the failure to sell Aurora at a massive cost to the public purse.”
“Not only did Liberal and Labor ignore the expert panel’s advice, it now seems Aurora had also raised the exact same issue regarding the need for a competitive wholesale power market.”
“This coalition of convenience between Labor and Liberal has condemned mum and dad electricity users to continue to pay more for their power than they otherwise should.”
“Instead of a fully competitive, low cost energy market in Tasmania, mums and dads will once again pay with their power bills.”
