The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed confirmation that that Will Hodgman, after three days of grovelling, had failed to secure a Federal Government commitment to fund the Tamar Valley Pulp Mill.

Greens Leader Nick McKim said Mr Hodgman’s taxpayer-funded junket to lobby for taxpayer money for the pulp mill was a sign of his poor judgement and skewed priorities.

“It seems that that the best Will Hodgman could achieve after three days of grovelling to Tony Abbott was a vague ‘commitment to consider’ providing taxpayers’ money for the pulp mill,” Mr McKim said.

“It is a sign of the Liberals’ poor judgement that they would even contemplate using taxpayers’ money to prop up a project that investors have universally shunned.”

“Maybe Mr Hodgman should have spent less time listening to his old colleagues deliver their maiden speeches, and more time standing up for Tasmania.”

“Honestly, where are Will Hodgman’s priorities?”

“He should have been fighting for Tasmania’s NBN funding, or for the remaining Gonski money, or for Tasmania to get a fair share of the GST, or for CSIRO jobs.”

“Instead he is living in some kind of time warp, where taxpayers are treated as fools and forced to pay for reckless and environmentally destructive white elephants.”
