At the Clarence City Council meeting of Monday, 11 November, Council unanimously threw their support behind the residents of Lindisfarne in their fight to stop the proposed closure of the Commonwealth Bank branch in Lindisfarne Village.

The Lindisfarne community are fighting back against the Bank’s announcement that they intend to close the local branch at the end of November.

Alderman Doug Chipman, the Mayor of Clarence, said that Council has joined with its residents in opposing the proposed closure.

Alderman Chipman this afternoon met with Commonwealth Bank’s senior representatives in Tasmania and conveyed Council’s concern about the bank closure. At the meeting Commonwealth Bank representatives reaffirmed that the decision to close the bank was final.

“I am disappointed with this decision as it disregards the needs of Lindisfarne’s large senior community and also ignores important investments and growth in this residential corridor on the eastern shore.”

Lindisfarne contains one of the largest concentrations of Australians over the age of 60 and is also the hub of a boom in new home construction.

“The Bank should have further investigated the market potential from Lindisfarne, which has undergone a substantial shopping precinct upgrade and has been experiencing strong residential growth,” Mayor Chipman said.

“This is an incredibly disappointing outcome from a bank that for many years sold itself as the ‘people’s bank’.”

“Council will continue to make representations to the Commonwealth Bank on behalf of our community.”
