NEW federal government money to continue Tasmania’s successful carp management program is proof of the commitment and skill of the people running the program, says Liberal MHR Eric Hutchinson.

Mr Hutchinson welcomed the official confirmation today that $820,000 would flow over the next two years to the state for the vital program.

Inland Fisheries Service officers have told Mr Hutchinson that the money will keep the program that they run on track to eradicate carp from Lake Sorell.

“That’s not only good for that part of the highlands but for the whole of Tasmania,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.

He paid tribute to Inland Fisheries’ Service fisheries manager Chris Wisniewski in developing and maintaining the carp eradication program.

“This funding acknowledges the work done by Chris _ there is no other person in Australia capable of taking on this enormous task with the commitment and skill he has in eradicating this introduced species,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.

“This is good news for a change for Lake Sorell in its fight with carp.’’
