The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Liberal Party to abandon plans to cut scientific research jobs in Tasmania.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP today said Tasmania would be badly affected by the cuts, in an area that is crucial for Tasmania’s future prosperity.
“Tasmania has the highest per-capita number of scientists in the country, and we will be hit harder than anywhere else by these cuts,” Mr McKim said.
“On the same day that we are giving science and technology learning a major boost in Tasmania, the Liberals are planning to put research jobs to the sword.”
“The question is whether Tony Abbott’s do-nothing deputy Will Hodgman will step in and prevent this anti-science assault on Tasmania’s research sector.”
“Tasmania’s future is in clean and green jobs, and the scientific research sector is at the leading edge of innovation in this arena.”
“Investment in scientific research is one of the most important drivers of future economic productivity, and when the Liberals attack science they are attacking the future prosperity of all Tasmanians.”
“The Greens applaud the work of our scientists, who enrich the state and put Tasmania’s name in lights on the global scientific stage.”
