The Tasmanian Greens today congratulated the all those who had worked for a state-wide ban on plastic bags, which comes into effect tomorrow.

“This is the culmination of a long community campaign, which saw the Greens’ Motion in support of a ban passed with tripartite support in 2010,” Ms O’Connor said.

“It is a triumph for Tasmania’s environment, removing tonnes of toxic plastic from the waste stream and from our landscape and waterways,”

“Plastic bags have a nasty way of finding their way into even the remotest places, where they can last for many years choking up waterways and killing wildlife.”

“All Tasmanians should feel proud that we are actively working to remove non-biodegradable plastic from our environment, keeping pace with the rest of the progressive world on this issue.”
