Marriage equality advocates have launched a new video in a final bid to convince state Upper House members to bring back the Same-Sex Marriage Bill narrowly defeated last year.
Convener of Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality, Andrew Badcock, said,
“The video highlights the urgency of marriage equality.”
“It features Burnie teacher, Nick Outterside, who was raised by two women, one of whom has died since the Same-Sex Marriage Bill was defeated last year.”
“Nick’s parents’ hope of marrying under the Tasmanian Bill will never come true, but it is not too late for other families like Nick’s.”
Nick Outterside said,
“My upbringing was excellent.”
“The only problem I had being brought up by two women was that the law didn’t recognise their relationship for what it was, a loving, committed, life partnership.”
“My family needed marriage equality last year and lots of other Australian families need this reform now”.
Tomorrow the Upper House will vote on a motion from Ruth Forrest MLC to revisit the Same-Sex Marriage Bill.
Mr Badcock said the constitutional concerns which sank the Bill last year have now been addressed with leading constitutional barrister, Bret Walker SC, declaring the Bill to be constitutionally valid.
