Pilsner Urquell 4

Pilsner Urquell

Czechoslavakia | 4.4% alcohol

Urquell, made since 1842 by the Plzensky Prazdroj — try saying that after a few glasses — brewery in the city of Pilsen, is the original Czech pilsner and for my money remains one of the very best.

It’s great because it’s made just from the best quality malted barley and hops, pure water and carefully selected yeast, but the real secret is the perfect balance achieved by the brewers.

Urquell is a strongly hopped beer, but the pungency and bitterness of the hops is completely in harmony with the malt, both in the aroma and on the palate. It satisfies completely. From the first sniff to the crisp, clean finish and delightful aftertaste.

I often use it as a yardstick when assessing pilsner/lager styles.
