VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING BILL
The Tasmanian Greens Member for Franklin Nick McKim MP today expressed disappointment at the defeat of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2013 and thanked everyone involved in the process.
Mr McKim said he would continue the work for a compassionate change to the law on behalf of those who suffer intolerable pain from a terminal illness, and who want the option of a dignified death.
“It is a tragedy that people suffering intolerable pain at the end of life still have no legal means of choosing a dignified death,” Mr McKim said.
“Unfortunately the vote of the parliament has condemned more Tasmanians to die agonising and humiliating deaths, and that’s a real shame.”
“Right now we have an unregulated, ad-hoc euthanasia system happening in our palliative care wards, where there are currently no protections for doctors or patients.
“I am not going to give up, and I am not going to abandon those people who are currently being forced to die an agonising death.”
“If I am re-elected, I will re-table the Bill and we will have this debate again in the next term of the Parliament.”
