A bumper field of 150 historic race cars and bikes will line up this weekend at the Baskerville Raceway to raise funds for much needed works at the historic track and to celebrate over 50 years of continuous use of the circuit.
The highlight of the weekend will be the Chris Ellis Memorial Race for Group N Minis which will see 11 Minis go head-to-head against classic cars of the same era, such as Datsun 1600s, Mazda RX2s as well as an EH Holden and Ford Escort.
Baskerville Foundation Spokesman Peter Killick said organisers had been amazed by the level of interest in the event, with entrants from throughout Tasmania and interstate.
“This year’s entry list reads like a who’s who of historic racing in Tasmania and it is heartening to see classic motorsport is still alive and well in the state,” Mr Killick said.
“Best of all, funds raised from the meeting will go to track works at Baskerville, including an urgent resurface.
“So far we’ve raised $50,000 of our $600,000 target and by the end of the year we hope to have $100,000 in the bank so we can start works drainage works in preparation for the resurface,” Mr Killick said.
Racing starts 9.00 am Saturday and Sunday, with races throughout the day – 1.00 pm Sunday is Chris Ellis memorial race!
