Tasmanian Greens today raised concerns about delays to the final approvals for the South East Irrigation Scheme Stage 3, which is intended to deliver 3000 Mega litres of water per year to Orielton, Sorrel and Forcett farmers.
In the House of Assembly today, Greens Water spokesperson Tim Morris MP asked the Minister for Water Bryan Green MP if was aware of concerns among local business owners over the potential for delays to the project.
“The Minister revealed that there are two unexpected holdups to the scheme, which include delays to the Federal Government approvals and finalising an agreement with TasWater over the long term capacity to supply the required amount of water,” Mr Morris said.
“Whilst the problems are not yet resolved, the Minister did express confidence that it still may be possible to begin construction of the scheme on time.”
“The new Federal Minister needs to quickly assess the additional information provided and make a decision that will allow the project to move toward construction.”
“The Greens welcome the extra scrutiny being undertaken by the Federal Government as it gives assurance that the potential issues will have been properly assessed and addressed.”
“I look forward to seeing the SEIS come to fruition as it will facilitate a significant boost to farming in the Sorell municipality.”
