The Tasmanian Greens today expressed disappointment in the apparent lack of action being taken to secure the future of Tasmania’s now endemic Eastern Quoll.

Greens Environment spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP, said that even though this year marked the 50th anniversary since the last Eastern Quoll was spotted on the mainland there seemed to be little urgency from the State Minister to secure Tasmania’s population.

“Extinction of a species due to human influence is an appalling failure of any modern administration and Mr Wightman needs to reassure concerned Tasmanians that he is doing everything within his capacity to ensure the Eastern Quoll’s survival,” said Ms O’Connor.

“We have lost the Thylacine, the Devil is hanging on by a thread, as is the Swift Parrot, so let’s not allow the Eastern Quoll to be driven down the same path by a lack of formal recognition of its declining numbers and a lack of action to protect its habitat and ensure its survival.”

“Even after the Scientific Advisory Committee recommended that the Eastern Quoll be listed as endangered, Mr Wightman has refused to update the species’ status.”

“We need reassurance from the Minister that he has taken the Scientific Advisory Committee’s advice and warning seriously, despite his refusal to list the species as endangered at this point in time.”

“Like so many species, the Eastern Quoll is now confined exclusively to our small island state and we have an international responsibility to secure its viable future.”

“Minister Wightman told Parliament today that more scientific evidence is needed to determine the Eastern Quoll’s population status. The Greens believe this further work must be undertaken as a matter of urgency,” Ms O’Connor said.
