President of the University of Tasmania Queer Society, Jackson Tegg, today (Tues) officially launched the 2013 Tasmanian Queer Film Festival.

To be held over three days in August, Mr Tegg said that the festival would bring a diverse range of critically acclaimed films to Tasmania.

“The festival will be held during the last week of August and include short and feature length queer films from Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK”, Mr Tegg said.

Mr Tegg highlighted the film festival as being a celebration of the dramatic steps that Tasmania has taken over the past decades in becoming a place accepting of queer
people.

“In 1995, the Tasmanian Government attempted to ban a Gay and Lesbian Film Festival from being held and now in 2013 we have a Premier working towards delivering on
marriage equality,” Mr Tegg said.

“In organising this festival we aim to highlight and celebrate Tasmania’s cultural and social renaissance.”

The opening night of the festival will be recognising this, with Tasmanian gay rights campaigner Rodney Croome and Premier Lara Giddings speaking about Tasmania’s gay
rights journey before the screening of the film Milk.

The festival will be held on the 26th, 28th and 30th of August at the Centre for the Arts, Hunter St. Further information and tickets can be found at http://www.tasqff.com
