To highlight the fact that a Light Rail Service would provide for Bridgewater and beyond to Brighton a much faster public transport option Palmer United Party Federal candidate for Denison, Debra Thurley, joined Ben Johnston President of the Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group on a Hobart City Express 7.48 X1 from Bridgewater last Thursday and attended a free presentation by ACT Minister Shane Rattenbury at the Glenorchy Civic Centre later that evening at 6.00pm.
Hobart is gifted with a multi-million rail corridor from Brighton to Mawson’s Place Ms Thurley said but the challenge as Ben Johnston would know only too well is for the infrastructure and sustainable transport bureaucrats of Tasmania if prompted by a Minister to seize this golden opportunity and progress Tasmania to the 21st Century.
What is noticeable is that the Greens have again put this forward as a project that attracts their support but Ms Thurley recalls that Nick McKim MP and Cassy O’Connor MP put their names to a document entitled “Hobart Light Rail Proposal” – Moving People Faster, Cleaner and Greener January 2010 as a policy initiative of the Tasmanian Green MPs and a reason to vote for them in the forthcoming election of 2010. What has happened might the people ask? Zilch!
The obvious frustration for Ben Johnston is that this Light Rail proposal gets again conveniently picked up by the Greens and co. as a wonderful platform heading to an election but post-election will nothing be delivered?
If elected to Denison Ms Thurley would fight for this project and keep it alive!
