The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, will join Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group President, Ben Johnston, on the Metro Tasmania X1 Bridgewater – Hobart “express” commuter bus service TOMORROW morning to demonstrate the benefits of light rail.
WHEN: 8.49am (approx.) TOMORROW 25 July 2013
WHERE: Franklin Square (corner of Elizabeth Street and Macquarie Street Hobart)
Mr Wilkie said the bus service was unsuitable for commuters to and from Hobart’s northern suburbs.
“The bus between Hobart and Bridgewater takes more than an hour at the best of times which is simply unviable for a lot of people and a major disincentive to public transport use,” Mr Wilkie said.
“Light rail service along the existing rail corridor could do the same journey in less than half an hour.
“Light rail makes sense on every level. It would link communities, reduce road congestion, save money and help clean up the environment.
“That the State Government has taken so long to only come up with a half-baked business case for light rail is entirely unacceptable. It needs to develop some vision and urgency and get this project moving.”
