GARY MORRIS MAKES IT CLEAR HE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
In light of Peter Garrett’s recent resignation from politics and speculation of the reformation of Midnight Oil, the band has no plans to reform or tour at this time.
Gary Morris, long term manager and behind the scenes 6th member of Midnight Oil has announced that he is relinquishing his role in the wake of this recent conjecture about whether the Oils will reform.
Due to reports of offers to headline festivals across the world demand for the band to reform has been gathering momentum from fans across the globe. It is because of this ever increasing pressure for the seminal rock band to reunite that Morris has decided to make his position clear at this point in time.
“Midnight Oil’s legacy is undeniable, we have achieved great things together, there is much to be proud of in the band’s list of achievements, we are brothers in arms and I will always be there for them” says Morris adding “However in light of recent speculation as to whether the band will reconvene now that Peter is quitting the political arena, now is the time to make my own position clear as to my future involvement with Midnight Oil.”
Renowned as the architect of the band’s career from their late 70’s origins in the surf pubs of Sydney’s northern beaches to the band’s final US tour in the lead up to Garrett’s resignation in 2002, Morris has been integral, if not the instigator, of many of the band’s finest achievements. From the iconic ‘Goat Island’ show on Sydney Harbour to the band’s 1986 tour of the Western Desert and Top End which resulted in the band’s best known album ‘Diesel and Dust’ and of course the unforgettable ‘Sorry’ statement during their performance the 2000 Olympics closing ceremony. Along the way Morris guided the band through the shark infested waters of the international music industry, staunchly maintaining their independence and integrity as well as the band’s reputation for fearlessly raising social awareness of issues including nuclear disarmament, indigenous people’s rights, youth homelessness and the environment.
“We truly did accomplish amazing and enduring things working together and we should treasure that, now and in the future.” said lead singer Peter Garrett.
Drummer Rob Hirst said,
“This news comes with mixed emotions: quiet reflection, warm affection and misty nostalgia for our shared history, alongside a real sense of achievement and well-deserved pride.”
Morris, who currently resides in Hobart Tasmania, has a number of other business interests which occupy most of his time.
Midnight Oil’s most recent release, ‘Essential Oils’ is a timely reflection on the band’s career highlighting the band’s own selection of tracks from their (11) studio albums and spanning their career from 1978 to 2002.
