The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the news that the United Kingdom has passed laws to allow marriage equality.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that it was a significant milestone for Britain, and again reinforced the fact that marriage equality was now a global standard that Australia was failing to meet.

“The news out of Britain today depicts a celebration, and it makes me look forward to the day that Tasmania finally ends legal discrimination against same sex couples,” said Mr McKim.

“All around the world the walls of discrimination are falling like dominoes, as the world moves to give same-sex couples equal legal standing in society.

“Tasmania still has an opportunity to share in some of that jubilation.”

“I hope that members of our Legislative Council are watching what is happening around the world when they come to reconsider Tasmania’s marriage equality Bill.”
