Will Potter, Washing DC-based independent journalist and author of “Green Is The New Red: an Insiders Account of a Social Movement Under Siege”, will be visiting Australia for the first time this August.
Potter will be holding speaking events in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney. Building off the huge interest garnered from other international tours, Potter will be discussing how corporations are working across borders to criminalise animal rights and environmental activists as terrorists. Through his work as a journalist and author Potter has become a leading authority on the animal rights and environmental movements, and civil liberties post-9/11.
“Green Is The New Red: an Insiders Account of a Social Movement Under Siege” is the story of how U.S. law enforcement are working to silence political dissent, particularly in the context of the post-9/11 terrorist threat environment. Potter outlines the political, legal, and public relations strategies that threaten even acts of nonviolent civil disobedience with the label of “terrorism”. “Green Is The New Red” has been featured by Utne Reader, The Rumpus, and Publisher’s Weekly. Kirkus Book Reviews awarded it a Kirkus Star for “remarkable merit” and named it one of the best books of 2011.
Will’s reporting and commentary have appeared in media outlets including Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, The Los Angeles Times, The Vermont Law Review, and The Washington Post. He has testified before the U.S. Congress about his reporting, as the only witness opposing the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. He has lectured at more than 100 universities and public forums internationally about his work, including Georgetown University, the New York City Bar Association, and the House of Democracy and Human Rights in Berlin.
