The gay lobby is running scared of a referendum on same-sex marriage said Mr Guy Barnett Spokesperson for the Save Marriage Coalition.
“Now that the new Prime Minister Mr Rudd has proposed a referendum or a plebiscite as an option on the same-sex marriage issue it is amazing that the gay lobby are now opposing it.
“They have previously said they think the public support same-sex marriage but they are not willing for it to be tested. Are they worried the views of the silent majority may be expressed?
“Children deserve the right to have a mum and a dad wherever possible and same-sex marriage denies a child this right.
“Mr Rudd’s comments also confirm marriage is a federal issue. The Tasmanian Same-Sex Marriage Bill should be immediately withdrawn, especially now that gay lobby proponents concede all discrimination against same sex couples has been removed from Tasmanian laws.
“The US Supreme Court decision to allow same-sex marriage overturns the view of the majority in California. The will of the people has been usurped by activist judges and that is another reason why a referendum has merit.
“There is of course the risk of the Christian community being vilified and verbally abused with accusations of bigot and homophobe as has occurred already. We condemn abuse, verbal or otherwise from all sides.
“The Tasmanian Government’s new adoption laws allow same-sex couples to adopt unknown children, condemning these children to a life without a mother or a father. It is a tragic outcome contrary to the best interests for these children. The Adoption legislation is adult focused in the extreme.”
Children at any stage of life should not be treated as toys or trophies, they are to be cherished loved and nurtured, and at all times their best interests should remain paramount, Mr Barnett said.
