A celebration of Urban Design in Australia has seen three projects take out their respective categories in
the 2013 Australia Award for Urban Design (AAUD).

The ambitious plan to link the Canberra CBD with the city’s iconic lake, Brisbane’s new Northern Busway
(Windsor to Kedron) and the upgrade of two Sydney laneways have become the Nation’s best Urban
Design projects for 2013. A revitalisation project in Central Dandenong in Victoria received a
Commendation.

The AAUD winners have been announced at a gala dinner at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

AAUD is Australia’s premier award for excellence in urban design and is hosted each year by the
Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and supported by the Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian
Institute of Landscape Architects, Consult Australia, Green Building Council of Australia, Property
Council of Australia and the Urban Design Forum.

PIA National President Dyan Currie said nominations were received for urban design projects in four
categories with the jury announcing winners in three of those categories.

“This is a great awards program looking for the best in urban design across a diverse range of projects.
This year they ranged from the laneway upgrades in Sydney to the major six kilometre Northern Busway
in Brisbane,” Ms Currie said.

“I congratulate the project teams for each winning entry. Again this year each of the winning entries is
testimony to the terrific work being achieved in planning and urban design.”

Greater emphasis is being placed on Urban Design each year in Australia with the Federal Government,
the State and Territories, Local Government, Peak Industry Bodies and Community organisations
recently coming together through the adoption of Creating Places for People – An Urban Design Protocol
for Australian Cities.

The Australia Award for Urban Design was first presented in 1996 after being proposed by the Urban
Design Task Force under former Prime Minister Paul Keating.

The AAUD is judged in four categories; Delivered Outcome – large scale, Delivered Outcome – small
scale, Policies Programs and Concepts – large scale and Policies Programs and Concepts – small scale.
This year there was no winner in the latter.

Category Winners:

Delivered Outcome – large scale Winner – Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron)
Delivered Outcome – large scale Commendation – Revitalising Central Dandenong:
Lonsdale St Redevelopment
Delivered Outcome – small scale – Winner – Sydney Laneway Upgrades
Policies, Programs and Concepts – large scale – Winner – Linking Canberra City to the Lake.
Entries are assessed against agreed criteria by a jury made up of experienced practitioners from
supporting organisations.
AAUD acknowledges the critical role good urban design plays in the social, economic and environmental
development of our cities and towns. The 2013 AAUD is sponsored by Bondor.
