The Tasmanian Greens Primary Industries spokesperson Kim Booth MP today called on the Tasmanian Liberal Party to be honest about its position on super trawlers fishing in Tasmanian waters.

“Now that Tony Abbott and Richard Colbeck have revealed their plan to open up our small pelagic fishery to super trawlers, it’s time to hear from the Tasmanian Liberals,” Mr Booth said.

“Will Hodgman needs to be up front about whether a Liberal government in Tasmania would unleash these destructive ocean vacuum cleaners on our waters.”

“Last year the Tasmanian Liberals voted unanimously with Labor and the Greens to oppose the super trawler then known as FV Margiris fishing in Australian waters.”

“Will Hodgman’s Liberals claim they are opposed to super trawlers fishing in Tasmanian waters, but what the Liberals are doing is trying to play both sides of the fence.”

“At the state level they’re pretending to oppose super trawlers but at a federal level they’re getting ready to welcome them back.”

“People should make no mistake that a vote for the Liberals will be a vote for the super trawler.”
