The Light Rail Forum has been established as a permanent advocacy group. Today’s second Light Rail Forum at Hobart Town Hall agreed to call on all three parliamentary parties to guarantee the rail corridor from Hobart to Brighton after freight rail ceases later this year.
“It was unanimous that we seek from Labor, the Liberals and Greens a 100% commitment not to close the option of the Hobart – Brighton rail link by allowing any part of the corridor to be sold or otherwise compromised, Forum Convenor Bob Brown said.
Sustainable Transport Minister Nick McKim told the forum that the Hobart – Glenorchy section was now Government policy.
“There was a new sense of optimism at this forum that we are on track to success. Political, civic, business and community leaders heard progress reports on similar but much more expensive light rail projects in Canberra and the Gold Coast,” co-Convenor Anna Reynolds said.
The next Light Rail Forum will be held in Glenorchy on Friday 18th October.
