The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim MP and Greens Member for Braddon Paul O’Halloran MP today met with representatives from Simplot, to discuss the long-term future of the company’s Devonport operations.
Mr O’Halloran today said he remained optimistic that a solution could be found that would ensure the factory’s long term future at Devonport.
“It goes without saying that the closure of the Devonport Simplot factory would be a terrible outcome for workers, growers and the local economy,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“We need to be considering all appropriate available options to ensure Simplot remains in Devonport for the long term.”
Mr O’Halloran said that the economic challenges meant Tasmania needed to build upon its unique advantages to be competitive.
“It’s disheartening news for the vegetable industry, but I am confident there are massive opportunities for Tasmanian agriculture in future, especially if we focus on diversifying our primary industries sector.”
“Part of our focus must be on developing the agricultural sector in areas where we know we are price competitive, and that means high-value, niche products that benefit from our strong brand.”
