Audiences across Tasmania continue to be amazed by the musical talents and world class performances
provided by Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) in 2012.
The popularity of the Tasmanian musical icon remained strong throughout 2012, with 90 per cent of Tasmanians
stating they considered the TSO to be a source of pride for the State, according to the latest EMRS figures
Retiring TSO Chairman Geoff Willis released the figures at the annual general meeting and said the company
had been inspired by the support and love Tasmanians continue to give.
“I am delighted to announce such a successful year for the TSO both on and off the stage,” Mr Willis said.
“The 2012 season was broad in its appeal and attracted diverse audiences.
“We advanced our important collaborations with major arts organisations including The Australian Ballet and
through one of the year’s highlights, Synaesthesia, performed at MONA.
“While the year has been positive we have reported a small deficit of $40,000 in 2012, largely due to the decision
to strategically invest in securing a better philanthropic fundraising stream.
“We believe that investing some money this way will ensure we can provide world class performances for many
years into the future.”
Managing Director Nicolas Heyward paid tribute to Mr Willis, thanking him for the hard work and passion he had
put into the company over 9 years as a both board member and chairman.
“On behalf of the TSO, the musicians, members and loyal supporters, I want to thank Mr Willis for his years of
dedication in making the TSO the outstanding company it is in 2013,” Mr Heyward said.
“Mr Willis has been an inspiration to all of us, demonstrating true leadership, along with an understanding of the
pride Tasmanians hold in the TSO and he will be sorely missed.”
