A Gonski Community Rally on Saturday, 25 May, on Parliament House Lawns at midday in Hobart will urge the State Government to sign onto critically needed Gonski reforms.
The Gonski rally is a family event with music and entertainment for children and will send a strong message to Premier Lara Giddings that further delay in signing onto Gonski reforms is unacceptable.
“Gonski would deliver an additional $400 million to Tasmanian schools over six years,” said Terry Polglase, AEU Tasmanian Branch President.
“Tasmania tops the nation in disadvantage and a new funding system based on a student’s need would be a game changer,” he said.
“If politicians fail to reach agreement on Gonski, our public schools will be worse hit, missing out on almost $12 billion nationally, over the next six years.”
“Gonski is an investment in our future and something we can’t afford not to do — we urge all sides of politics to back these vital reforms.”
The Gonski Community Rally is part of a national day of action in support of Gonski with community events being held in every capital city.
The Hobart event, on Parliament House Lawns on Saturday, is from 12 to 1pm and will feature the South Hobart Primary School choir, speakers from the AEU, State School Parents and Friends, and state and federal governments.
“We urge anyone who supports replacing a broken school funding system, with one that funds students according to need, to come along on Saturday and show support for Gonski,” he said.
