The Greens Health spokesperson Paul O’Halloran MP today moved a Notice of Motion in the House of Assembly calling for an independent consultant to investigate the discovery of elevated lead levels in drinking water at Rosebery.
“Residents and families at Rosebery are entitled to expect a safe and reliable water supply,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“It is vital that the source of this pollutant is identified and addressed, and support is offered to those affected.”
“The Greens are calling for an appropriately qualified independent consultant to be appointed to have oversight of the current remedial work at Rosebery.”
“A fresh pair of eyes, at arms length from the bureaucracy, will provide an objective assessment of previous work, current efforts, and advise on future actions.”
“A considerable amount of data has been gathered in recent years by a range of agencies regarding environmental heavy metal levels in Rosebery.”
“It is not yet clear whether this latest contamination is related to previous concerns over environmental heavy metals at Rosebery, but it is important that it is thoroughly investigated.”
“The Greens are not disputing the results of previous investigations at Rosebery, but we believe that appointing an independent consultant would help address some of the concerns residents have raised, and place this latest incident in a broader public policy context.”
“The expert consultant would be responsible for investigating all other incidents of potential or identified heavy metal pollution at Rosebery over the last decade, and ascertaining any possible links with concerns previously raised.”
“The consultant would also be required to make recommendations regarding the need for any necessary future work, including recommending any further formal inquiries and the appropriate format for any such inquiries.“
