Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania (AACT) is renewing the call to end duck shooting in Tasmania, and beyond. This comes in light of revelations of a mass slaughter of waterbirds in Victoria in March 2013.
“What happened at Box Flat Nature Reserve in Victoria was one of the most appalling and senseless slaughters of native waterbirds.” announced Chris Simcox, spokesperson for AACT, “More than 800 native birds were shot and abandoned, including 147 endangered Freckled Ducks, 136 Grey Teal, and 561 Pink-eared Ducks. This was yet another example of what shooters will do when they think no-one is watching.”
The duck shooting season is currently on in Tasmania, until 10 June 2013. Rescuers will be watching wetlands around Tasmania and be ready to defend native waterbirds in the firing line.
“Native waterbirds are routinely exposed to cruel and senseless killing during the open season.” said Mr Simcox, “For every duck shot and bagged, another is wounded and left to die slowly. This is exactly why duck shooting must end, not just in Tasmania, but in every state of Australia.”
