Melbourne based band Buchanan are set to release their debut album Human Spring on May 10.

I chatted to one of the band members Josh Simons about Tasmania, the single, new album and how Buchanan got their name.

Josh tells me he has only been to Tasmania once at an ‘awesome’ boat show with his parents. The show is of course ‘The Wooden Boat Festival’ and he tells me his folks got themselves a boat and sailed across Bass Strait with it! Josh would love to make a return visit and with the album soon to be released that seems a likely event.

I ask Josh about the evolution of the bands name and he tells me the name came about because it evokes no strong mental image. It was the name favoured by most members of the band.

A little research tells me that the name Buchanan originates from the Scottish meaning ‘seat of the canon’ and although the album is not ecclesiastical in nature it attempts to appeal to the ability of ordinary people to rally and is optimistic for humanity.

The album and single were inspired by what the guys sensed as a rallying and an energy among ordinary people for peace and for helping each other and as the title suggests ‘hope springs eternal’.

The songs about conflict juxtaposed with love songs together, demonstrate the strength of love .

After the launch Buchanan hope to embark on a full national tour in September which will include Tasmania. Josh confides in me that the band was offered a tour opportunity to Tasmania last year which they had to turn down as they were still working on the album but Josh is keen to sail back to Tassie in September, so watch this space.

In the meantime you can sample Human Spring.
